Gabriel is a gentle 12 year old male cat who lived with two senior citizens as their only pet until they passed away. Their daughter, who already had two cats, brought him to Victoria with the intention of keeping him. However, despite numerous and varied efforts to integrate him over a two year period, aggression issues with one of her male cats as well as loneliness make the daughter’s home less than an ideal long-term environment for Gabriel.
Gabriel deserves a forever home in quiet environment — free of other animals — in which his “people” are home much of the time, He craves attention and petting more so than most cats. He was adopted by the daughter’s parents in 2016 as a two year old cat , rescued from a terrible situation in a hoarder’s home. The hoarder had over 50 dying feral cats on her property, and Gabriel was only one of four to survive. He was skin and bones when rescued, and very fearful of people. The daughter’s parents were housebound due to illness, so he constantly sat with them. He is used to having someone around mostly 24/7.
Gabriel’s terrible beginning in life likely contributed to his periodontal decay and sensitive stomach. The daughter paid for the required surgery to extract his teeth, which could not be saved. He healed fully with a course of antibiotics and is able to eat both dry food and wet food. He eats a diet of hydrolized protein which can be purchased from any veterinarian. Extensive bloodwork and ultrasound have not revealed additional health issues. He is a small, slight cat, but is in good health.
Although Gabriel is initially shy and distrustful, he is very friendly and ultra-affectionate when he builds trust with someone. He enjoys being petted and talked to, called by his name, and also addressed as “good boy.” He never growls but quietly hisses when he’s frightened. He quickly adapted to being around the daughter, son-in-law, and their adult children. He simply cannot adapt to an aggressively playful cat, and being isolated in a guest room during the daughter’s work day contributes to his loneliness.
If you are a homebody who would appreciate an elderly cat that is exceptionally affectionate and loyal, and are able to spend a lot of time with him – even by simply watching television or reading — Gabriel will be your forever pet and he will love you with his whole cat heart.
